Booking Procedure

 

NODA South West Weekend 5th, 6th and 7th September 2003

 

1.  PRODUCTION NUMBERS - RAY JEFFERY and ALISON AXFORD

a.m.

"When Mabel Comes in the Room"Once again this will be a spectacular number in Ray's inimitable stylerequiring lots of punch. Please wear soft shoes (not rubber) and bring props for the number.

p.m.

"Singing in the Rain"
Title number from the show. Please bring small umbrellas.

 

 

2.  JAZZ DANCE ROUTINE -ALISON AXFORD

pm only

Alison's energetic style of dance will keep you on your toes all afternoon. Be prepared to present the finished routine/s to the Production Class at 4.45pm. Bring soft shoes, and tap in case there is time for a short routine.

 

 

3.   LIVELY GILBERT & SULLIVAN - ALISTAIR DONKIN

a.m.

"The Sorcerer"
"Ring Forth Ye Bells", "Why, where be IT' (including the subsequent dance), " Oh Marvellous Illusion" (soloists required -Alexis, Aline, J.W.Wells, Lady Sangazure, Sir Marmaduke, Dr. Daly, Notary, Mrs.Partlett,& Constance); Dialogue Scene 1 between Alexis and Aline before "Love Feeds".

"Trial by Jury"
 "Hark the Hour of Ten is Sounding"; "A Nice Dilemma" (soloists required -Judge Plaintiff, Defendant, Counsel, Usher & Foreman); Any other bits of Trial there is time for. 
It would help if students would bring their own music, and mention on the booking form  if  you wish to sing a role. Ibis will allow time to find replacements to fill roles for ensembles. Scores are usually available on request from Libraries.

 

 

4.   DRAMA - RUTH BETTESWORTH

a.m.

Directing Youth Theatre and Projects.
This was tutored at the NODA Summer School last year, and was such a popular class, it is being repeated this year. Ruth is the Tutor at the Summer School also.

General Acting Technique.
Learn all those techniques the correct way in order to project the character you are playing. Something for everyone, musical as well as drama.

 

 

5.   PUBLICITY and PROGRAMME and POSTER DESIGN - BRIAN EPPS

am only

Learn how to make an impact with the eye-catching appeal of the poster for your show. New shows require special publicity to help get 'bums on seats'. Good style of design in your Programme may win your Society a prize in the NODA Programme Competition.

 

 

6.   SO YOU WANT TO BE A MUSICAL DIRECTOR! - NICK LAWRENCE  All day.

a.m.

What does it take to become a Musical Director? Everything changes with the  arrival of the 'band', including your style. Nick will guide you through the necessary steps of Directing a Musical, including casting, rehearsing the Cast, Principals, Orchestra, right up to Band Call. The morning session will start at a very basic level and move on to the mind numbing in time for lunch! Bring a Music Stand, your baton,  a vocal score of "My Fair Lady', a pencil and some manuscript paper.

Performing Class "My Fair Lady". A production number "I'm Getting Married in the Morning" from this ever popular show. However many times you have done this show, this is a chance to have some fun with it. Volunteers for the principal role of Dolittle welcomed, also singers for the chorus. Wear suitable shoes for dancing. Musical Directors from AM to work with chorus.

 

 

7.   STAGE MANAGERS DO WE REALLY NEED THEM? - BRIAN BUITLE  All day

 

This Workshop will be a fascinating insight into what is required for Stage Managers. Brian tutors about this subject at the Bristol Theatre School and also at the NODA Summer School.

a) Who is suitable for the job?
b) What a Stage Manager does.
c) The qualities required.

The D. S.M. and the Book
a)      How to run a show without getting grey hair!
b)      How  a D.S.M. can be your best friend.

A Practical Guide to preparing a Rehearsal Room

 
How  to survive Health & Safety Rules & Still Put on A Show

 You will find it useful to bring notebooks and pencils, to make notes on particular points of interest.

 

 

8.   SINGING - JOHN OXLEY All day

a.m.

a) Breathing  - breath control in basic Folk Song.
b) Placing and covering in vocal exercises, progressing to songs.
c) A little part-singing if time permits.

p.m.

Progression to more advanced technique and focus of breath and apply these to individually selected songs. Introduce 3-part singing if time permits. Bring your own song, and if you need to use the music, one for the accompanist.

 

 

9.   MAKE-UP - SANDRA HUXTABLE

a.m.

Basic make-up for stage and various styles Character.

p.m.

'Casualty' Make-up and effects with emphasis on "blood, guts and gore!"
Make-up will be provided. Bring an overall to protect your clothes.

 

 

10.  CHRIS HARRIS

a.m.

Bringing out the 'Physical' side of Play(s) and Theatre
A subject with particular appeal to younger members. Chris' experience in this field shows the value of careful instruction to make it look realistic to your audience.

p.m.

Work on Mime and Pantomime. Chris is world renowned in this, so take advantage of his expert knowledge and skills.

 

 

11. DIRECTING FOR BEGINNERS - GORDON NEAGLE  All day

a.m.

Directing a play.
A complete look at what the motivation is to direct. The 'grass roots' start with a production through to the responsibilities of the Director and development of the play.

p.m.

Differing Playwrights. If there is sufficient interest, the afternoon will be taken up with considering different approach to different text, modern and classical - Shakespeare to Godber and Ayckbourn, and the way they can be staged, proscenium, thrust, or in the round.

 

 

 

LOCATION OF FUNCTIONS:

All functions will take place at Bicton College of Agriculture.

ACCOMMODATION:

1.

We have single en-suite rooms available, in addition to the blocks with singles and twins with washbasins.

2.

There is a noise ban after midnight, but this should not prevent partying, provided it is within blocks with windows closed.

3.

To assist those who wish to party, certain blocks will be allocated to them, but not en-suite accommodation. We hope to use blocks furthest from those who want peace, to avoid complaints, and satisfy everyone. Those who wish to use the party blocks must tick the "partying" column on the Booking Form..

4.

Those who want to share a double room must bracket their names together.

 

 

BOOKING:

1.

All bookings and any subsequent enquiries must be made in writing to the above address.

Allocation of Workshops and Accommodation will be in booking sequence.

3

Bookings will close on 18th July 2003.

4

No bookings or cancellations will be accepted after 18th July 2003.

 

 

PAYMENT

1.

A minimum deposit of £10.00 is required on booking for each person, which will be forfeited if the booking is not confirmed or taken up by a substitute obtained by you. One cheque please, to cover the total deposits.

2.

Cheques are payable to NODA and sent to the above address.

3.

You may pay at any time, but the final payment date is 18th July 2003.

Details for each delegate, including timetable and directions, will be despatched when full payment is received.
