ENQUIRY INTO PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR THE THEATRE

As announced in the January newsletter, the DCMS Select Committee has launched a comprehensive enquiry into public support for theatre. The committee is inquiring into the nature and adequacy of public support for theatre in the UK as well as a range of other issues that have been identified.

NODA was delighted to have been invited to present its case for better public support for amateur theatre, alongside representatives from the Central Council for Amateur Theatre, the Little Theatre Guild of Great Britain and the Drama Association of Wales. An audio recording of our Oral Evidence, which took place on 25 January, can be found at http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Console.aspx?Encoding=2565. To access this recording you are required to have Windows Media Player installed on you computer, which can be obtained from www.microsoft.com/mediaplayer.

You can also read a transcript of our Oral Evidence at http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200405/cmselect/cmcumeds/uc254-i/uc25402.htm

Laura Crane died just two weeks after her seventeenth birthday from a complex mix of FOUR types of cancer. The Laura Crane Trust was registered five months later in October 1996 to fund research specifically into cancers affecting 13-25 year olds. It also funds measures to help improve the lives of the young people during their treatment and in the aftermath of their illness.  Cancer is the most common form of non-accidental death in teenagers in the UK, yet the Laura Crane Trust is the only UK charity funding research specifically into cancers affecting this age group.

Laura always took great delight in the theatre, both on stage and going to watch shows. The last play she performed in, in her GCSE year just before she was diagnosed with cancer, was Animal Farm in which she played Snowball.

Between October 2004 and October 2005 we are appealing to people all over the country connected to theatre and drama to

‘aCT against CaNCeR’

How can you help?

  1. By donating the proceeds from a performance
  2. By holding a raffle or collection at a performance
  3. By having a collection box in your studio or theatre

Or to simply make a donation to our appeal please send a cheque for whatever you can afford to:

Act against Cancer Appeal, The Laura Crane Trust, PO Box 437, Huddersfield, HD1 9QH.

Thank you for your support!

Book by: Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
Co-Conceived by: Eric Idle
Lyrics by: Lynn Ahrens
Music by: Stephen Flaherty
Conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle.

This wonderful new show has just been released for amateur production.

After all those years being stuck on a page,
Did you ever imagine you’d see me onstage?
Now I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue!
No, there’s no telling what!
But I’ll give you a clue..."

So says the mischievous Cat in the Hat at the onset of this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once On This Island, and Ragtime) have lovingly brought to life all of our favourite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and all of the Whos of Whoville!

Perusal material and application forms are available on request.

2005 is Year of the Volunteer, launched by the New Home Secretary Charles Clarke this week. Year of the Volunteer has a different theme for each month, with January being Health and February being Youth. A special website has been set up to support the initiative: www.yearofthevolunteer.org

Volunteering England, in partnership with other bodies, is distributing small grants designed to enable and encourage more people to participate in the Year of the Volunteer. They will fund activities that are conceived, owned and delivered by individuals or groups of individuals, rather than the work of organisations, with a range of £500 to £1,500. However, these can be fed through formal voluntary bodies and consortia.
