Grand plans for Palace

OVERWHELMING public support has been given to plans for the £1.6 million refurbishment of Palace Avenue Theatre.

Following a recent exhibition detailing proposals for the Paignton theatre, visitors expressed enormous enthusiasm, and Torbay Council architects are now considering these views.

Ron Morris, Deputy leader of the council, said: “Over 400 people from all age groups attended the exhibition. As well as showing their support, they made very pertinent comments and innovative suggestions. Where possible, these plans are being amended in response to the views expressed. Obviously we are working to a budget. but we are committed to reflecting the wishes of the community wherever it is achievable. This is very much an evolving project, and there is still the opportunity for people to express their opinions. We would especially like to hear from anyone who may have different ideas for the use of the wide range of facilities that will be available at the theatre. As well as a completely refurbished auditorium, the plans include a multi-purpose studio theatre that could be used for a variety of cultural and artistic activities. So I encourage people to let us know how they want to use it."

The exhibition was conducted by Sandover on behalf of the council.

Peter Sandover said: "To attract Heritage lottery Funding for this project we have to prove that we are conserving and enhancing the heritage of the building and the surrounding area. We must also ensure that the community enjoys its heritage. We can achieve this by refurbishing the theatre and encouraging events and activities for people who are interested in heritage and the arts but who at present do not have access to suitable facilities."

Once planning consent is given the council will submit a bid to Heritage Lottery and the Arts Council of England. It will take six months to process the applications, and the aim is to start the theatre’s refurbishment work next year.

Without the work, the theatre would have to be closed, because in its present condition the building does not meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, which comes into effect in 2004.
