Aladdin 2008

NODA Review

ALADDIN Paignton Pantomime Productions The Palace Theatre

Director: Iain Douglas Choreography: Elaine Johnson, Amanda Coote M.D. John Amery

When you go to see Aladdin the one of the things you expect to see is lots of lustre. This pantomime was not a disappointment; the costumes shimmered with colour against a glittering background. The scene in the cave was quite splendid. Abanazer and The Spirit of the Ring provided a strong opening and encouraged the audience to be part of the production from the start, quickly followed by a lively young company dancing and singing energetically. The choreography was a real strength of the show, with flawless moves performed with enthusiasm. The singing was much improved this year and words could be heard, although the music was sometimes a little too loud. It is important to build up a rapport with the audience; Wishee Washee did this very successfully, but there is a fine line between rapport and embarrassment and Widow Twankey antagonized rather than built up a sympathetic relationship. Aladdin and Princess Mandarin made a very good partnership and The Empress seemed very at home in her role. The show was slick with a good pace with the number “Diamonds are Forever” giving a contrast by slowing the tempo down a little. Props were well made and effective and the music was expertly played by a 5 piece band.

I should like to thank you, most sincerely, for inviting Denis and me to “Aladdin” yesterday, which we thoroughly enjoyed, and to congratulate you on another superb pantomime production. This one had all the ingredients of good family Christmas entertainment and the standard was most professional.

The sets were spectacular, with great perspective, so that we appeared to look into one illuminated picture frame after another. Stunning costumes completed the awesome visual effect and I do compliment you on the colour schemes used, particularly the frosty blue/white/silver of the Finale.

Musical numbers were up-beat and modern, with great audience appeal and the singing was lusty and energetic, with excellent accompaniment from The Aladdin Band. Then there was the dancing – Bravo! I thought the routines were imaginative, attractive and full of energy, showing the capabilities of all the dancers, but I must just mention the Junior Dancers, who performed equally as well as any of the more senior troupe, showing such dedication.

Casting gave us all the traditional pantomime characters that we love – even love to hate! Great audience participation is essential from some and I do offer my congratulations to Wishee Washee, Widow Twankey, Abanazer and the Spirit of the Ring (played with such natural charm by Jo). Aladdin and Princess Mandarin gave us romance and ensured the story stayed on track, aided by So-Shy, The Empress, a most colourful Genie and the two “funnies” Yu Dun Wong and Hu Dun Pong ( what delicious names!). Excellent pace throughout ensured we never had a chance to be bored and if we were ever in danger of that, there was always Widow Twankey to wake us up with her inevitable water cannon! Such memorable pictures, like the wonderful cave of jewels and the two Finales will long remain with me, as well as the immaculate dancing and your fabulous costumes.

Once again I thank you for the kind hospitality offered to us by Ranee and the opportunity to speak to the cast on stage afterwards. It is greatly appreciated. May I end by sending you all my very best wishes for the remainder of your successful run and wish everyone a most happy and healthy 2009.

Kind regards,

Gerry.
