Animals in Distress CHARITY
NUMBER 900234
The
ANIMALS IN DISTRESS rescue
centre at Ipplepen cares
for and re-homes unwanted
domestic animals. The Charity
was formed in 1981 and the
centre was opened in 1994.
Over 1000 animals are re-homed
every year. The policy of
the charity is never to
turn away an animal in distress
and never to have an animal
put to sleep unless, on
veterinary advice, it is
too ill or dangerous to
re-home.
Animals
come to the rescue centre
for a variety of reasons
including bereavement of
owner, illness of owner,
relationship breakdown of
owners, financial reasons,
and sadly, cruelty and neglect.
The Rescue Centre also cares
for stray dogs from the
South Hams area.
Every
care is taken to ensure
that prospective owners
find the right pet for them.
Home cheeks are carried
out,
followed
by further checks a few
weeks after the pet has
gone to live there. If there
are problems, the animals
must be returned to the
rescue centre.
The
Charity provides a 24 hour
emergency telephone service
for the community operated
from the rescue centre and
veterinary advice is also
available.
A
sponsorship scheme is available
for a variety of animals
that for various reasons
are likely to remain at
the centre for the rest
of their lives. The charity
also helps people in the
community and talks and
presentations are given
to local groups and schools,
and outings are organised
to the rescue centre. Many
people who cannot have pets
of their own come to the
centre to walk the dogs
or cuddle the cats. Volunteers
of all ages are always welcome.
Animals
in Distress Torbay &
West Country, has recently
incorporated another local
charity, Torbay Animal Welfare
Sanctuary. The rescue centre
is coming to the end of
major refurbishment and
will provide a modern cattery,
kennels and treatment room
and the capacity will have
doubled.
