Jack and The Beanstalk 2009

NODA Review

4th January 2010

Iain Douglas

Director, Paignton Pantomime Productions

Dear Iain,

Re: “Jack & the Beanstalk”

Many thanks for inviting Denis and me once again to PPP.s annual pantomime, which we both
thought was truly excellent! It was everything a traditional panto should be: bursting with movement
and colour, attractive sets, superb costumes, talented dancers, wonderful principals and throughout, a
great Band, who ensured the lively music kept all our feet a-tapping. High commendations also to
them for being the frequent butt of the Dame.s slapstick – such sports!

Throughout, the story was beautifully told and projected to us by a charismatic Jack (Dean) and
delightful Princess Primrose (Katie), who kept alive the magic and romance of the tale. There to help
was Simple Simon – played by Steve, who was in danger of stealing the show, with his lively
personality and great rapport with the audience, especially the children. Then there was the Dame
(Alan) who struck just the right note with outrageous costumes, occasional innuendo and sheer force
of his personality. Well done to all four! The rest of the Principal line-up were no less successful and
how we loved to cheer the „goodies. and boo the evil „baddies!. A special mention must be made of
Buttermilk, the Cow however, as I applaud the super use of exotic eyelashes and splendid footwork
from the first tap-dancing cow I have seen in panto. Bravo! Take a bow also, the Chorus, who gave
sterling support and all the wonderful Dancers, of all ages who created another dimension to the story
and enhanced many scenes, with extra special congratulations to your Junior Dancers, who produced a
highlight for me with their “Ugly Bugs” routine.

So there you have it – such hard work from everyone, but obvious supreme dedication from all
concerned produced what was, I felt, one of the best pantomimes I have seen this company perform.

It was a great pleasure for me to meet the cast on stage afterwards to personally congratulate them and
I sincerely hope your production was as successful financially as it certainly was, artistically. My
special thanks are also extended to Ranee – FOH – who hosted us so beautifully throughout.

With best wishes and a Happy New Year to all at Paignton Pantomime Productions,

Gerry.

Geraldine Branton, NODA Vice President / SW Councillor.
