Chris Harris - Workshop

The gap between amateur and professional was well demonstrated when 24 members of PPP were given a masterclass in the art of pantomime by one of the country's finest exponents of the genre.

Chris Harris was only able to scratch the surface in the six and a half hours he spent with the Society but his imaginative, instructive and highly entertaining discourse captivated and enthused his audience.

By mixing talk about the history of pantomime, it's traditions, performance techniques and mime with amusing anecdotes, physical theatre, singing and practical exercises, Chris gave an insight into how to develop a script and how even a pause or gesture can enhance and lift a performance.

The inclusion of a section on "pantomime routines" with particular emphasis on "The Magic Echo" which will appear in our Cinderella this Christmas caused great amusement as did exercises to develop concentration and co-ordination.

During other parts of the day tennis balls and then balloons were used to great effect in demonstrating acting techniques and a  "routine".

The time passed all to quickly and by the end of the afternoon Chris left those present realising the endless possibilities that can emerge from the printed page.

The Society would like to record its sincere thanks to Chris for an excellent workshop and to new PPP member Julian Nietrzebka for his wonderful keyboard skills during the day.

pantomime is all about timing
