Paignton Pantomime
Productions have broken with tradition this year as they feature for the first
time ever a male lead.
Jonathon Hunt, playing Aladdin in the show at the
Palace Theatre. He takes the stage alongside Sarah Caplan who
plays Princess Jasmine.
Sarah is well known
to local audiences for her numerous appearances in in
productions across the Bay.
PPP spokesman Brian
Lee says that pantomime shouldn't be underrated as a
force for social change. He reckons Aladdin can play
a role in the Herald Express Stop The Rot campaign:
"I'm thrilled that in your campaign, the
Hearld Express has decided to make stand against
a general decline in standards by providing a forum
for the public."
"In my view, even
something as simple as a visit to the pantomime, whilst
not a magic panacea, can help in a small way to encourage
family participation and hopefully give some value and
proprtion back to life."
Other Principals in
Aladdin include Jo
Matthews as The Empress, Dennis Wenman as Widow Twankey, Miles Opie as Genie of
the Lamp and new faces to Paignton Pantomime Productions, Richard Thomas and
Matt Bones play Wishee Washee and The Inspector
respectively.
Rae and Colin Gilderthorp
complete the cast as Slave of the Ring and Abanazer. They're as well
known for their prowess at prop production as they are
for their on stage exploits. They've even built an all-weather
scenery store in their back yard. Extra vitality and enthusiasm are provided by dancers and
chorus.
PPP's shows are a Paignton institution and this one's sure to
be no exception.
As usual, the proceedings have been directed by Iain Douglas.
Musical Direction comes from John Amery and choreographers Elaine Johnson and Amanda
Read have whipped everyone into line.
Aladdin opens at the Palace
Theatre, Paignton on December 22 and runs until January 3.
