It was a change to see a version of this favourite pantomime with an up
to date script by Nigel Ellacott. It had a good pace and there were no old jokes
that we have all heard a hundred times before. It was a most colourful show, with beautiful
costumes, attractive scenery that worked well and was lit effectively. The
choreography was excellent with well disciplined, varied routines that included
both adult and children's chorus working together. The five-piece band that
played with considerable depth was always unobtrusive, supporting the singing
and playing out only when necessary. The chorus were lively, sang with energy
and always smiled. All characters played their roles with enthusiasm, but it is
important to know your audience. The afternoon I was there, had a lot of
children, they needed more time to understand the jokes, so some dialogue needed
slowing down to give them time to respond.
The music was well chosen, however I felt the song "Pure and Simple" for
Cinderella and Prince Charming did not really work as a romantic duet. The
scene, "Cinderella's dream comes true" was beautiful and the highlight of a
truly sparkling show. |
