A word from the Director

Dick Whittington 2006 - NODA Report

DICK WHITTINGTON - Paignton Pantomime Productions - Riviera Centre Torquay

Director - Iain Douglas    Choreography - Elaine Johnson & Amanda Coote    MD - John Amery

This performance was full of enthusiasm and energy and extremely well done considering the problems they had to face due to the company not being able to use their usual venue. The production kicked off to a good start with a rousing overture from the band. There were no weak performances from the cast, but I found Idle Jack very appealing and King Rat's performance was magnificent. The choreography from both adult and junior dancers was imaginative and performed with precision and the orchestration of the well chosen songs was interesting and creative. The costumes were most attractive and very colourful, the set was effective and good use was made of props. The production had pace and was always busy, but just occasionally I would have liked the cast to pause for breath and include some tender, romantic moments. However, Dick Whittington and Alice Fitzwarren did build up a convincing partnership with each other and sang their musical numbers with confidence. My congratulations to Dean Breyley for an excellent programme design. This production deserved a full audience for every performance and it was a great shame that their usual supporters did not travel just a little further to see it. However I would like to wish the group every success when they move back to their newly renovated Palace Theatre.
