A bright and colourful
pantomime with excellent scenery (all constructed
and painted by company members) and stunning
costumes including a dazzling red and gold
finale. I felt the story line in the script
was weak, but the cast worked overtime to
keep it going.
There were some strong
performances from Helen Randall (Dick Whittington)
who took command of the stage whenever she
appeared, Rae Gilderthorp (Queen Rat) who
was playing the baddie for the first time
and got right into the role with a vengeance
and Elaine Johnson (Tommy the Cat) who managed
to convey clearly all she needed to without
saying a word.
The band under the
watchful, experienced eye of the MD brought
much life into this production with interesting,
foot tapping arrangements. The chorus and
dancers performed with energy and enthusiasm,
and with the principals made sure the audience
(lots of children) were completely involved
with frequent opportunities for audience
participation.
